To or for

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've read this sentence : "We have the entire appartment to ourselves".

Why the preposition "to" here ? I would have said "We have the entire appartment for ourselves". Would it be correct and would it mean the same?

Thank you for your help.

Bernard

Hello Bernard,

As you know, prepositions don't follow any logic. Therefore, although 'for' makes a lot more sense, the correct preposition in this type of expression is 'to'.

The good thing about it is that if you said 'for', you would be perfectly understandable.
