as or like

Hello,

Is the expression " this computer is slow as a turtle" correct? It seems to that we should say "this computer is slow like a turtle. 'As' is used with the pattern as + subject + verb.

Am I right or wrong?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Bernard,

I agree with you. However, 'as' would also work in the 'as ... as' construction: This computer is as slow as a turtle.

If this is a sentence you've heard, it's quite possible that the first 'as' was there but inaudible because of its phonetic linking to the 's' before and after it: ... is ... slow.

If you've read this somewhere, the writer has written what he/she usually says phonetically. Please bear in mind that not every native speaker writes grammatically correctly.
