Informal social expressions

social_expressions_informal.png

In the previous lesson, we looked at some formal & friendly and some very formal expressions for social exchanges in everyday situations. In this lesson, we're going to look at informal expressions in the same contexts. Even if you do not have very close English-speaking friends or colleagues to use these expressions with, it is worth familiarising yourself with them as you are likely to hear them quite often when you watch movies in English.

In this lesson, we're going to:

  • Remind ourselves of the three levels of formality and when to use each level appropriately.
  • Look at informal and colloquial expressions to:
    • Greet & say goodbye
    • Offer & invite
    • Request
    • Express gratitude
    • Apologise
    • Congratulate
    • Convey condolences
