Formal social expressions

In every situation, it is important that you choose expressions with the right degree of formality. Using excessively formal language with a close friend can create distance between you, and using highly informal language in a business situation may make you sound too casual or even rude.

In this lesson, we're going to:

  • Define three levels of formality: 1. informal & colloquial, 2. formal, and 3. very formal
  • Look at formal and very formal expressions to:
  • Greet & say goodbye
  • Offer & invite
  • Request
  • Express gratitude
  • Apologise
  • Congratulate
  • Convey condolences

In the next lesson, we'll look at informal and colloquial expressions for the same functions.
