  3. Tutorial: 6 Essential Steps to Speaking English Fluently

In this tutorial, I explain 6 essential steps to becoming a fluent and confident speaker of English.
What I share is mainly based on my personal experience in the past 40 years, both as a student and a teacher of English.
I hope it will be helpful to you on your journey towards fluency in English as well.

What are the main principles behind these 6 essential steps?

    1.  We need to remember that speaking quickly and using complex language does not mean we are fluent. Fluency is about speaking clearly, with appropriate vocabulary, and correct use of the main structures.
    2.  How close or how far our first language is from English makes a big difference in how long it will take us to achieve fluency. If our first language is very different from English, we need to be patient and persistent.
    3.  We can only learn to speak fluently through listening - not reading, writing, and translating (the old school method).
    4.  There are two ways to listen: 1. relaxed & passive, 2. focused & active - They're equally important for our progress.
    5.  We need to be selective in what we listen to based on our interests and needs.
    6.  We need to lose the 'translation habit' and build direct reflexes in English because this habit is the main hurdle to achieving fluency.
    7. Building reflexes requires 'spaced repetition' & 'oral drilling'.
    8. It is important to use the language we're learning both in writing and in speaking and get feedback on how well we're doing. Without feedback and correction, mistakes become reinforced and difficult to get rid of later.

  8. Conversation Practice (PDF)

Exercises to improve your conversation skills around daily topics

You can use the worksheets to prepare for the LIVE Conversation Workshops with Minoo.

In these workshops, you actively practise the questions and answers that you have prepared with another student (dialogue in a breakout room).
You will then share the information you have about your conversation partner with the group (monologue in the main room).

This type of exercise helps you to improve your fluency and confidence to speak.

Conversation workshops take place every other Sunday at 3 p.m. London time.
You will receive your Zoom invitation by email 4 days before the session.

They are open to all Gold members.
