Negative sentences

Hello,

We can say : "I don’t think I’ll go swimming today.", but can we also say : I think I won't go swimming today".

Hello Bernard,

While the second sentence is not grammatically wrong, it is not common at all.

This is only the case with 'think'. With other verbs, you can make the second part negative:

I don't think he'll go swimming.
I hope he won't go swimming.
I assume he won't go swimming.
